Modernist era writer and publisher Bob Brown (Robert Carlton Brown, 1886-1959) had a “life-long fascination with the poetics involved in multiple reading machines, from ticker-tape machines to film projectors to his own microfilm-like machine.” In 1929 he moved to Paris and there established Roving Eye Press; the following year he published The Readies, an anthology of works written to be viewed using a reading machine he invented.
