The Beinecke Library Rare Book & Manuscript Library is pleased to announce the appointment of Lucy Mulroney as the library’s Associate Director of Collections, Research, and Education (CRE). She will provide leadership to the CRE department, which includes seven curators, the head of research services, a research librarian, and an administrative assistant. Selected after a national search, Mulroney joins the Beinecke Library in mid-August.

Mulroney comes to the Beinecke Library from the Syracuse University Libraries, where she is currently Senior Director at the Special Collections Research Center.  She has held that position since 2015, and before that served as interim director and curator.   

“As demonstrated in her interview as well as conversations with current colleagues, Lucy has enthusiasm, creativity and passion in everything she does,” Beinecke Library Directory Edwin C. Schroeder said. “She brings a deep commitment to special collections, exploring how they intersect with the teaching and research missions of the university, as well as looking to bring the collections beyond the university through programs that engage the broader public.”

Mulroney’s work at Syracuse has included collection development, the creation of a Faculty Fellows program to facilitate teaching and research, teaching classes, curating exhibits, and oversight of the center’s public events, and collaboration with colleagues across the library system to establish priorities for cataloging, manuscript processing, conservation, and digitization.  She has also developed programs for the library to address the long-term preservation and access needs of its extensive photographic, audio/visual, and digital collections.

As the library writes the next chapters of research and programming in its renovated building, I am thrilled to lead the department where the material of history inspires the scholarship of tomorrow.”

Mulroney holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Visual and Cultural Studies from the University of Rochester.  Her research interests are broad and include modern art and visual cultures, the history of the book, avant-garde and radical literature, as well a deep interest in illustration technologies, photography, and design. This fall, the University of Chicago Press will publish her book Andy Warhol, Publisher.
