Apple correspondence files (YCAL MSS 1627)

This collection contains correspondence documenting the publication of Apple magazine, edited and published by David Curry, with related papers.  (1.08 linear feet)

La Brèche records (GEN MSS 2152)

The collection consists of printed editions and related production material for issues 1, 2, 4, and 6 of La Brèche: Action surréaliste, 1961-1964. It includes manuscript and typescript articles, poems, stories, photographs, collages and drawings published in issues 1, 2, 4, and 6, as well as correspondence. Authors and artists include René Alleau, Philippe Audoin, Robert Benayoun, Micheline Bounoure, André Breton, Adrien Dax, Pierre Dhainaut , Maurice de Gandillac, Julien Gracq, Jean Schuster, Jean-Claude Silbermann, and Toyen. Of particular interest is a custom case by bookbinder Pierre Mercier that houses issues 1, 2, and 4 of La Brèche. Notable works in the collection include drawings by Marianne van Hirtum and Endre Roszda, a photograph by Pierre Molinier, collages by Robert Benayoun and a colorful autograph letter and envelope from Matta.

Danny Fields papers (GEN MSS 1243)

The papers consist of correspondence, writings, scrapbooks, photographs, business papers, personal papers, interviews, printed material, audiovisual material, and computer media documenting the life and career of Danny Fields, including his work as a promoter and manager in the music business, notably as manager of the Ramones, his association with Andy Warhol’s Factory circle, and his work as a writer and editor of books and magazines, including Dream On: Livin’ on the Edge with Steven Tyler & Aerosmith (with Cyrinda Foxe-Tyler, Berkley Boulevard Books, 2000), the biography Linda McCartney: A Portrait (Warner, 2001) and magazines including Datebook, Hits, and Rock Scene, among others. The papers also include materials related to teen magazine editor Gloria Stavers.

Dick Gallup papers (YCAL MSSS 1630)

The Dick Gallup papers consist of correspondence, writings, diaries and notebooks, teaching and administrative files, and personal papers that document Gallup’s personal and professional activities. The bulk of the papers range in date from Gallup’s youth in the late 1950s to the 1980s. Correspondents include Bill Berkson, Ted Berrigan, Joe Brainard, Michael Brownstein, Tom Clark, Andrei Codrescu, Jack Collom, Alfred Corn, Theodore Enslin, Clayton Eshleman, Larry Fagin, Allen Ginsberg, Bobby Louise Hawkins, Anselm Hollo, Joanne Kyger, Ron Padgett, Ed Sanders, Tom Veitch, Anne Waldman, and Lewis Warsh.  (15.80 linear feet)

Jean Genet papers (GEN MSS 1739)

The Jean Genet papers document the creative process, literary career, and involvement in political and social causes of French author and political activist Jean Genet. The collection contains manuscript material of published and unpublished literary works—including screenplays and essays—alongside political writings, correspondence, personal papers, and other documents related to Genet. The collection spans the years 1940 to 1988, with the majority of materials dating from 1944 to 1983. (13 linear feet)

John Levin collection of political activism for the Progressive Labor Party (WA MSS S-4559)

This collection documents John Levin’s political interests and activities with the Marxist-Leninist Progressive Labor Party (PLP)—primarily in California’s San Francisco Bay Area from the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s. It also includes research related to Levin’s later publication You Say You Want a Revolution: SDS, PL, and Adventures in Building a Worker-Student Alliance, 2019 (coedited with Earl Silbar). Levin’s papers consist of his correspondence, notebooks, writing drafts, print publications, and collected third-party publications. The majority is composed of subject files relating to his research interests and political activities in the anti-Vietnam War student movement, labor movement, and Black liberation movement, including his participation in the SF State Strike, 1968-1969. Subject files include Levin’s notes, news clippings, internal party records, and political print ephemera (e.g., fliers, leaflets, and pamphlets) primarily from the PLP as well as Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and other groups; they also include some photographs and SF State Strike-related digital A/V files. The remainder of the collection consists of internal party records, printed ephemera, and publications of the PLP, SDS, and additional political organizations and front groups.  (11.54 linear feet)

Michael Petree collection of Restau Press (YCAL MSS 1631)

This collection contains writings, proofs, and correspondence relating to Restau Press, which published a single issue in 1970. Writings include submissions to Restau Press and poetry by contemporaries. Notable poets in this collection include John Wieners, Janine Pommy-Vega, Gerrit Lansing, and Jackson Mac Low. The Restau Press records included here contain drafts of Restau: A Journal of Passage and a corrected typescript of “Spring and Autumn Annals: A Celebration of the Season,” by Diane di Prima. PAJ records and Bonnie Marranca papers (YCAL MSS 1622)

The collection contains two primary sections. The first focuses on the editorial processes related to the production of Performing Arts Journal/PAJ: A Journal of Performance and Art issues and PAJ Publications titles. The second section focuses on Bonnie Marranca’s personal papers. As a co-founder and editor-in-chief of PAJ: A Journal of Performance and Art for over four decades, Marranca’s papers are deeply inter-connected with her professional work including correspondence with notable artists, lecture notes, drafts of scholarly articles, recorded interviews, and a collection of print ephemera related to theatre and performing arts shows. Sandra Berrigan papers (YCAL MSS 1629)

The Sandra Berrigan Papers consists of her personal and literary correspondence, as well as realia related to Sandra Berrigan’s life and work as a writer and poet. The correspondence captures Berrigan’s many decades long friendships with poets and creatives in and around the second generation of the New York School of poets including Ron Padgett, Dick Gallup, Anne Waldman, Joe Brainard, and Maureen Owen. Included in the correspondence are Berrigan’s original letters she exchanged with her former husband and poet, Ted Berrigan. These letters were written in 1962 while she was held at the Jackson Memorial Hospital mental ward–at the behest of her parents–during the beginning of the Berrigans’ marriage. Also included in this collection are drafts of the book Dear Sandy, Hello and three poetry quilts Sandra created by incorporating pieces of poetry sent to her by friends.  (4.38 linear feet)

Winifred Welles papers (YCAL MSS 1628)

The Winifred Welles papers contain materials related to the author’s work in poetry and fiction. It includes early drafts, manuscripts, transcripts, and correspondence with early 20th century writers including H. L. Mencken, Louise Townsend Nicholl, Lawrence Gilman, and Christopher Morley. Included in the papers is a draft of an unfinished manuscript about Emily Dickinson, completed after Welles’ death by the author Laura Benét. (4.50 linear feet)

Edward Luther Stevenson papers (addition) (GEN MSS 1517)

The addition consists of photographic negatives, glass plate negatives, writings and personal papers, including correspondence, clippings, manuscripts, ephemera, and research notes created or collected by Stevenson.  The photographic material includes photographic facsimiles of charts, maps and globes from the 16th to 18th centuries. Donald Nicholson-Smith papers (addition) (GEN MSS 2131)

This series contains posters, pamphlets, handbills, booklets, and ephemera collected by Donald Nicholson-Smith and created by others. Includes documentation of Nicholson-Smith’s international relations with radical and anarchist groups from the 1960s and 70s. (26.08 linear feet)

F. Herbert Bormann papers (addition) (MS 2012)

The addition contains records documenting the administration and research activities of Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in New Hampshire, 1961-2006. Included are correspondence, reports, meeting minutes, research data, publications, grant applications, research proposals, maps, blueprints, and photographs. A significant portion of the records were created by Bormann’s colleague Gene E. Likens, often under the auspices of the Hubbard Brook Research Foundation and the Institute of Ecosystem Studies (later renamed the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies). (6.88 linear feet)

Living Theatre records - Julian Beck papers (YCAL MSS 1038)

The Beck papers document the life and work of Julian Beck, particularly his creative process, writings, and acting career. Beck’s journals and notebooks provide a detailed account of his daily life and work. The subseries also contains drafts, notes, research files, and correspondence relating to Beck’s writings, including works he wrote collaboratively with his wife Judith Malina and other members of The Living Theatre. Also present are scripts, correspondence, and production files relating to Beck’s career in theatre, film, and television; Beck’s literary and personal correspondence; papers relating to his painting and art career; the contents of his desk and office at the time of his death; and personal papers, including school papers, financial records, medical records, and Beck’s collection of ephemera, printed material, and clippings. P.D. Ouspensky memorial collection (addition) (MS 840)

This accession contains brief notes by P.D. Ouspensky’s students on the Law of Seven, the State and Man, Mechanicalism, and a 1978 critic and survey of the Ouspensky Memorial Collection by a researcher with the initials K.C. It also contains two folders of transcriptions of meetings based on questions with Sophia Ouspensky, known in these documents as Madame or S.O., dating from March 5, 1923 to March 8, 1952. The transcriptions of meetings are organized from the original groupings and not by date. Various participants are identified mostly by last name only. Included is a 1951 letter by Madame Ouspensky of her first meeting with Gurdjieff in 1919 in St. Petersburg, Russia. (.21 linear feet)
