Beinecke staff have made available several collections and additions to existing collections, including:

New collections

Bea Nettles, Photographic Portraits for Mountain Dream Tarot (Gen MSS 2136)

Composite photographic prints with hand painting created between 1970 and 1975 by Bea Nettles as images for Mountain Dream Tarot, published approximately 1975 and distributed by the Light Impressions Corporation. The collection also includes three photographic prints of her children and a student created in 2001. The composite photographic portraits depict the subjects as tarot cards based on the Rider-Waite Tarot published by the Rider Company in 1909 based on the instructions of academic and mystic Arthur Edward Waite (1857-1942) and illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith (1878-1951). The portraits document artists and students at the Penland School of Craft in Penland, North Carolina, created primarily during residencies by Nettles, as well as portraits of friends created in Rochester, New York, and portraits of family members likely created in Gainesville, Florida, and Rochester, New York, as well as self-portraits of Nettles. Dorothy Gray papers (JWJ MSS 386)

The Dorothy Gray papers span the years 1890-1994 and consist of correspondence, photographic prints and negatives, photograph albums, musical scores, clippings, appointment books, and files related to her life in Hollywood and her career as a talent manager, including scrapbooks following the careers of friends and associates. The collection also documents her family and childhood. (4.17 linear feet)

Gaddis Smith papers ( MS 2137)

The collection consists of personal and travel diaries, academic writings, short story drafts, research and lecture notes, and correspondence. Topics covered in the collection are Gaddis Smith’s early life, living in New Haven, marriage and family, aging, hobbies, running and fitness, archival and general research, attending Yale and Duke University, work at Yale University as a professor, chair of the Department of History, and directorship of the Yale University MacMillian Center for International and Area Studies (formerly known as Yale Center for International and Area Studies), international travel and politics, Iraq War, 9/11, Vietnam War protesting and arrest records, maritime history of US Great Lakes region and Atlantic Ocean, and Yale Alumni associations. Additions to existing collections

African American film collection (additions) (JWJ MSS 238)

The additions consist of Trouble Man script by John D. F. Black, 1971 December 13; Willie Dynamite final screenplay by Ron Cutler, 1973 January 5; and Super Fly T.N.T. release dialogue script by Alex Haley, 1973 July 13. (0.75 linear feet)

Arthur L. Liman papers (addition) (MS 1762)

This accession contains writings, notes, and articles related to the life and work Arthur Liman, including materials documenting the Iran-Contra affair. (1.92 linear feet)

Daniela Gioseffi papers (addition) (YCAL MSS 1096)

This accession includes born-digital and audiovisual material containing interviews, readings, and other programming. (1.92 linear feet)

Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders (GLAD) Records (addition) (MS 1961)

This accession includes letters, awards and proclamations related to GLAD. (2.21 linear feet)

Gilman Family papers (addition) (MS 240)

This accession contains correspondence, deeds), journals, and other papers related to the Coit family. Typescripts of original documents are included when present. (2.5 linear feet)

James Weldon Johnson Collection manuscript miscellany (addition) (JWJ MSS MISC)

Typed letter, signed by Orilla Miller Winfield, one of James Baldwin’s former teachers. She wrote to poet Shaun O. Henderson about her experiences as Baldwin’s mentor. Winfield details her early teaching days at P.S. 124 in Harlem, meeting the Baldwins, and her time with James Baldwin as a child. (1 item)

Lesbian and Gay Liberation collection (addition) (MS 1846)

Patricia Wald papers (addition) (MS 1631)

The material consists of subject files, professional and personal correspondence, writings and speeches, newspaper clippings, and audiovisual materials primarily documenting Patricia Wald’s work after retiring from active service on the D. C. Court of Appeals. [requires permission to access] (11 linear feet)

Dickson Hammond and Marjorie Browning Leavens papers (addition) (MS 715)

The addition consists of correspondence among the Leavens family, diaries from Marjorie Browning Leavens and Dickson Hammond Leavens, and 35mm slides documenting Yale in China, life in Changsha and surrounding locations. Other material includes manuscript material and notes for public broadcasts and publications concerning the Leavens’ work related to their time in China and their other endeavors. (6.46 linear feet)

William Huse Dunham, Jr. papers (addition) (MS 856)
