The Yale Collection of American Literature is delighted to welcome visiting research fellow Linda Leavell to the Beinecke Library to  conduct research related to her project, “The Spirit of 291: A Group Biography of the Stieglitz Circle.” 

Professor Leavell is the inaugural Ruth Stephan Research Fellow. The Ruth Stephan Fellowship honors the life and work of the novelist, editor, translator, and literature advocate Ruth Stephan. Founder and editor of the groundbreaking little magazine Tiger’s Eye, and author of several books including Christina, or, The Royal Road to Rome: a Fictional Memoir, Ruth Stephan’s contributions to and support for literature and the arts are well documented in her literary archive, the Ruth Stephan Papers, and in the Tiger’s Eye Records, housed at the Beinecke Library.

On Thursday, November 6th, Professor Leavell will deliver a paper based on her fellowship research at the 2014 Modernist Studies Association Meeting in Pittsburgh, PA: “At last! A woman on paper”: The Reception of Marianne Moore and Georgia O’Keeffe in Modernist New York.” For more information: MSA 16: Confluence & Division.

Professor Leavell is the author of “Holding On Upside Down: The Life and Work of Marianne Moore,” recently a finalist for Nation Book Critics Circle Award (see recent reviews: http://www.nybooks.com/articles/archives/2013/nov/07/badger-mole-and-marianne-moore/ ; http://www.nytimes.com/2014/02/13/books/holding-on-upside-down-a-biography-of-marianne-moore.html?_r=0). She received support for the project from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Oklahoma Humanities Council, the American Philosophical Society, and the Center for Humanities at Oregon State University.
