2025 is the 100th anniversary of Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana and the 50th anniversary of Claire’s Corner Copia, two iconic establishments that exemplify the extraordinary history of restaurants and other food businesses in New Haven. There is no better contemporary guide to New Haven’s historic foodways than Colin M. Caplan, a New Haven native, architectural designer, historian, author, tour operator and pizza guru.

Caplan studied architecture and earth science at Tulane University in New Orleans, LA, graduating with a Masters in Architecture. As an architectural designer Caplan focuses on historic preservation and adaptive reuse, and is a Historical Architect in Connecticut. Caplan is a historian specializing in New Haven and Connecticut history, a registered genealogist, a National Register consultant, film and television producer, and lecturer at schools and other public and private settings. He is author of seven published books on New Haven history including his most recent title, Pizza in New Haven. Caplan also runs Taste of New Haven culinary tours and events & Elm City Party Bike.

Caplan will present some highlights of New Haven food history, and then be in conversation with Mondays at Beinecke host and New Haven City Historian, Michael Morand, who will also bring in questions from the online audience.

Mondays at Beinecke online talks focus on materials from the collections and include an opening presentation at 4pm followed by conversation and Q & A beginning about 4:30pm until 5pm.
