Arno Schubbach received his MS in Mathematics from the Humboldt University in Berlin in 1999. He studied there at the same time philosophy and was a student research assistant of the Edition of Ernst Cassirer’s Unpublished Writings (ECN). A first research stay at the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library in 1999 and 2000 was devoted to a detailed page census of the Ernst Cassirer Papers. 2005, Arno Schubbach received his PhD in Philosophy from the Humboldt University in Berlin, between 2005 and 2009 he was a PostDoc at the National Center of Competence Research Iconic Criticism (eikones) at the University of Basel (Switzerland). Since September 2009, he is assistent professor for “Theory of Images” at the University of Basel.During the research stay at the Beinecke Rare Books & Manuscript Library in January and February 2010, Arno Schubbach will examine Ernst Cassirer’s first sketches, notes and excerpts concerning his “Philosophy of Symbolic Forms”. The development of his thinking, but also its embodiment and the deployment of concepts in paper work will be focused in this research.
