Dr. Elizabeth Scott-Baumann is a Research Fellow at Wolfson College, Oxford University, and a Lecturer in Renaissance Literature at Oxford Brookes University. After an undergraduate and Masters degree at Oxford University, she completed her D.Phil on two seventeenth-century poets, Lucy Hutchinson and Margaret Cavendish, under the supervision of Professor David Norbrook in 2008. She has published articles in Women’s Writing and Literature Compass, writes regularly for the Times Literary Supplement and has edited a collection of essays entitled The Intellectual Culture of Puritan Women, 1558-1680, forthcoming in 2010 with Palgrave Macmillan. Elizabeth is now working on a study of early modern women poets in their literary culture, provisionally entitledForms of Engagement: Women, Poetry and Culture, 1640-1680, which is currently under consideration for publication with Oxford University Press. This study will challenge the critical orthodoxy that women were excluded from male intellectual culture in the early modern period, and bring renewed and productive attention to women’s relationship with poetic form. It will focus major poets Margaret Cavendish, Katherine Philips and Lucy Hutchinson. The Beinecke library’s rich seventeenth-century holdings in the Osborn collection will be essential to research for this project, especially the only manuscript copy of Lucy Hutchinson’s epic poem, Order and Disorder.
